If you’ve ever scrolled endlessly through folders trying to remember where a photo lives, you already know the problem. Your photo library isn’t necessarily too big — it’s just hard to see.

When images are scattered across folders, drives, or apps, the real challenge isn’t the number of files. It’s visibility. Photos exist, but without a clear, unified overview, they remain fragmented, out of context, and make even the simplest decisions unnecessarily difficult.

This is exactly the moment when people start looking for advice on organizing photos on Mac. And contrary to common assumptions, the solution doesn’t begin with folders, tags, or rigid systems. It starts with the ability to see your images clearly — all of them, wherever they are stored — so you can finally regain control of your photo library.

Grid view is where most people start when browsing photos. Rows of thumbnails provide a fast overview of a folder or album, which is why Finder, Apple Photos, Lightroom, and Capture One rely heavily on this view.

Detail view focuses on a single image. It lets you zoom in, inspect sharpness, and check metadata such as EXIF information. This makes it essential for editing decisions, but inefficient when you need to explore a large photo library or compare many images at once.

Both views work well — until scale becomes an issue. Moving image by image or folder by folder makes it difficult to understand how photos relate to each other. This is usually the point where ranking photos or organizing collections starts to feel slower than it should.

Some problems don’t need more precision — they need distance.

That’s exactly why Panorama View, a feature unique to our photo organizer, was designed. Today, Peakto is the only photo management software to offer this kind of global, continuous visual view.

Panorama View lets you explore large photo libraries at scale. Thousands of images appear in a single, zoomable visual space, making patterns, duplicates, and forgotten photos immediately visible. Instead of working folder by folder, you see your entire collection as one coherent landscape.

Rather than scrolling endlessly, you step back. Relationships between images — similar shots, repeated moments, variations within a series — become obvious at a glance. At this level, organizing photos feels intuitive rather than technical.

Photo exploration is not about navigation — it’s about perception. And this global way of viewing images, made possible only by Peakto, often gives you the fastest way to rank photos and the turning point before organizing, or decluttering an entire photo library.

If you’ve been taking photos for a few years, your Mac probably hides thousands of pictures in every corner — in iCloud, the Apple Photos app, and random folders you forgot existed. Don’t worry, you’re not the only one. According to Western Digital, the average person has over 2,000 photos scattered across several devices. That’s a lot of memories waiting to be rediscovered!

The good news? You can bring order to that chaos in just a few simple steps. You don’t need to be a tech expert or a professional photographer. All you need is a bit of time, a clear plan, and a photo organizer tool that makes the process easier — like Peakto, which helps you see and manage all your images in one place.

The Apple Photos app keeps them in a library inside your Pictures folder.

Some might be in iCloud Photos, especially if you use “Optimize Mac Storage.”

And others hide in folders like Downloads, Desktop, or Documents.

You can use Finder to search for all your images:

Open a new Finder window.

Type kind:image in the search bar.

Make sure you include your Mac’s whole drive in the search.

If you’ve used different cameras, iPhones, or SD cards, you might also have photos on external drives. Plug them in — every file counts.

“The first step to order is awareness — you can’t organize what you can’t find.” — Digital Declutter Handbook (2023)

Tip: Tools like Peakto can scan your Mac, Photos Library, and even external drives to show every image in one clean view — no more guessing where things are.

If you’ve ever taken a burst of 20 photos just to get one perfect shot, you know how quickly things get messy. You definitely need a faster way to rank photos.

Here’s a secret: you don’t need to keep everything. According to Backblaze’s photo habits report (2024), most people only look at 10% of the pictures they store.
If you have thousands of photos, this can take forever — unless you let AI help.

Nowadays, if you’re looking for the fastest way to rank photos on a Mac, tools like Peakto’s aesthetic analysis make it possible to automatically sort images by visual quality. It looks at sharpness, color balance, and composition to find your best shots — all without sending anything to the cloud.

Sometimes early deletion isn’t realistic and this is where AI-assisted tools like Peakto, our photo organizer, help—not by replacing judgment, but by reducing repetition. Peakto’s aesthetic analysis reviews entire folders or libraries and highlights the strongest images based on:

Sharpness

Exposure

Composition

All analysis runs locally, without cloud-based generative AI. Instead of manually comparing dozens of near-identical photos, creators immediately see the most promising candidates and decide with confidence. We respect the way you safely store your photos.

This reflects a broader trend in modern photo management: AI narrows the field so humans can decide calmly.

It is possible today to take pictures with a smartphone and obtain a high level of quality. Indeed, an increasing number of models are equipped with the latest technology in terms of photography. However, in many situations, it seems wiser to opt for a reflex, a bridge, a compact or a hybrid. With the right equipment, it’s possible to achieve better images with impeccable rendering and sharpness.

The choice is not so easy to make, considering the many camera models available on the market. There is something for every profile (beginner, intermediate or expert) and for every type of photography (wedding photography, portrait photography, travel photography, article photography, etc.). The danger is that you may purchase a model that doesn’t suit your photography habits. In this case, it is more likely that the user’s expectations will not be met.

The GoPro is particularly effective at fulfilling expectations. This action camera has unique capabilities for recording videos, but also for taking pictures. If the practicality of this 2-in-1 camera is an asset, what attracts more attention is its functionality: the GoPro captures the best of the scene to create a photo. But, it still needs to be used properly.

To take beautiful pictures with a GoPro, it is essential to select the photo mode, especially since the video mode is configured by default. According to the expressed need, the user will be able to choose a precise setting, namely

burst mode;

night function;

LiveBurst function;

the timer;

the planned shoot.

On some versions, you can benefit from other features such as SuperPhoto or HDR that allow you to obtain a better photo quality depending on the exposure, the place or the composition. It is also possible to set specific settings with the Protune function such as screen resolution or lens by adjusting the field of view for example.

When you start to get interested in photography and use a digital camera to take pictures, it’s not unusual to get it wrong sometimes. The important thing is to identify common photo errors and avoid them, such as adjusting your camera at the last moment. It is advisable to make the necessary adjustments beforehand so as not to miss the opportunity to capture a scene that could become an excellent shot.

However, when it comes to settings, care should be taken. Depending on the type of photograph (packshot, portrait photo, art photo, landscape photo, etc.) and the time of day (morning, midday or evening), the type of setting to be made is not the same. Although the easiest thing to do is to select automatic mode and click, hoping that the camera will do the rest to produce beautiful pictures, the result is rarely what you expect.

There is a routine to apply for each situation so that you don’t spend several minutes changing settings in the menu. Once the technique has been acquired, it is easier to get lost and to develop automatisms. In any case, it is recommended that the camera is always set to a short exposure time and a small aperture, which can be changed with a turn of the dial, to be ready when an opportunity to take a memorable shot presents itself.

To create beautiful photos, you must not miss any opportunity to capture a unique moment. Professional photographers know this as well as they know that a successful photo must satisfy certain criteria, such as eye-catching colors and a good set-up. We’re talking about composition. This is the art of ordering the different elements of a photograph. Putting subjects or scenes in space may seem easy at first glance, but nothing could be less obvious.

A good composition may require shifting the subject a bit to make a portrait look better, or moving around to enhance a landscape. This is all the more important with a camera that does not really allow you to manage depth of field and precise focus. To achieve a perfect composition on a photo, it is also possible to integrate an element of the decor or remove it, as desired.

In the end, the most common compositions used by photographers looking for visually interesting photos are:

the centred composition;

the rule of thirds;

change of perspective;

the balance of the images;

guidelines;

post-production cropping.

After taking the photos, all that remains is to develop them on real photo paper. Before the development stage, editing may be carried out to give the photos a professional appearance. Editing photos requires specific skills, possessed by a professional photographer, to make certain modifications such as:

crop the photo: this is to check that the image is straight. Otherwise, we can crop it to remove unwanted or distracting elements, improve the composition or highlight a focal point. The rule of thirds, which is a common cropping and editing technique, gives good results;

adjust the color temperature: the goal is to reduce the dominant color to get closer to neutrality. To do this, we use the white balance or the color balance of the editing software;

adjust the brightness: this involves adjusting different sliders. For example, the tone curve and the exposure allow you to edit the backlighting, the excessive darkness or the excessive brightness of an image;

adjust the saturation: by playing with the saturation, you can make a photo more attractive. A common practice is to highlight certain parts of the image and undersaturate others to direct the eye towards the desired elements. The direction of light on a subject completely changes the viewer’s perception;

improve the contrast: by using the contrasts, we manage to give dimension to a photograph. Different types of adjustments can be made using texture contrast, tone contrast, color contrast, high contrast or low contrast;

use a photo filter: this involves using effects, sometimes very original ones, proposed by the editing software to improve the image. The artistic filter that allows you to change the colors or texture of the photos can be an interesting choice.

Other modifications can be made depending on the desired rendering. Thus, the photographer can convert the photo to black and white or make an unwanted element in the composition disappear.

To minimize the risk of loss, and because an accident can occur at any time, it would be better to copy your images a second time. Backup is an inexpensive and relatively easy process. Some cameras have two memory card slots for real-time backup. Simply activate the “second copy” or “backup copy” option, and you’re done. This method is simple and autonomous. However, memory cards cannot be renewed. As a result, the transfer rate is low. Moreover, in the context of a trip, the consumption of cards can be significant, which is ultimately quite expensive.

There are other techniques. Some of the best solutions for backing up photos include:

backup to a USB memory stick: like memory cards, this type of flash memory is very resistant and can store a lot of data for a relatively low price. The medium also has a very high transfer rate. The main disadvantage is that it can quickly get damaged during transport;

backing up to an SSD or external hard drive requires a laptop. This type of backup is convenient, especially for an external hard drive that offers excellent storage capacity. As for the SSD, it is unbeatable in terms of the speed of data transfer;

Cloud backup: Online backup is becoming more common. The advantage is that the files are usually duplicated and the backup is relocated. So the risk of loss is almost zero. However, we are not immune to computer attacks. Moreover, data protection is not fully guaranteed;

backup to a smartphone or tablet: Since the use of a computer is not possible, it is always possible to store photos on a tablet or smartphone from a memory card or an external hard drive. This is a technique that offers the advantage of being less cumbersome, but the transfer time is less than satisfactory.

In short, to create beautiful photos, it is not essential to be a professional photographer. Just apply these different tricks. It is also advisable to choose a flattering angle, because the positioning of the gaze is a point to consider when creating beautiful photos, as well as the light. Using the flash as a main or accent light to illuminate a subject or to brighten the shadows during a session in full sunlight could be appropriate. Another trick is to use a standard photo lens. A 50 mm focal length will certainly do. It is convenient for creating different styles of photographs.

Digital cameras and phones, which are now very efficient, make it possible to obtain great-quality images. However, what criteria should be applied in order to take a successful photo?

The subject is not the easiest one to approach, because, like any art, the beauty of a photo is based on objective and subjective criteria.
Depending on the effect sought, the degree of importance of these various parameters varies. A landscape photo is successful when its depth of field is maximum and faithfully reproduces the details present. On the contrary, macro photography consists of concentrating on the element in the foreground, highlighted by the background blur that surrounds the subject called bokeh. To do this, the focus must favor a very shallow depth of field.

A photo does not always accurately reveal the extent of a landscape. Placing a flower, or a model in the foreground indicates the real proportions of the place.

A photographer orders and sets up the different elements that make up a photo. This step, as important as the choice of the light and the subject, makes the result pleasant to look at and invites the viewer to put themselves in the place of the photographer.

A well-organized photo is determined by the detail of the composition, wide or narrow, and the choice of the subject or the most important element. The location of the object or model has a direct impact on the final visual readability of the image and depends on the importance given to the surroundings. By erasing the surrounding scenery, the body of the image attracts the viewer’s eye more.

A successful composition is based on several points:

the rule of thirds;

the distribution of masses (the décor must be carefully placed);

the precision of the light;

the harmony of the colors.

Note that the height of the shots and the angle chosen also determine the quality of a photo. Varying the viewing angles creates a certain dynamism and diversifies the work of the photographer. High angle, low angle, close up or far away, this diversity in the execution allows you to obtain a variety of shots that arouse interest and attract the eye. Shots usually taken at eye level become more attractive when other possibilities are considered. Hip height, low to the ground, high to the ground, approximate aiming, there are so many alternatives available to photographers to boost their creativity.

Technical skills are essential; however, photographers are artists in their own right. Like any artist, they transmit emotions and use their art to communicate a message, to touch the viewer.

This criterion, which undeniably contributes to the success of a photo, is one of the most subjective elements. Emotions, specific to each person, vary according to personality, experience, culture, but also to the current state of mind. There are, however, subjects such as life, death, laughter, childhood, etc., which reveal universal emotions. As an example, a photo of the island of St. Martin devastated by Hurricane Irma affects the islanders who suffered the disaster more than the inhabitants of Beijing. A photo of a woman laughing clearly shows joy, laughter, to all those who see it, even if they come from different backgrounds.

The degree of success of a photo also depends on the subsequent use of the photo. When we identify the reason why a photograph is being taken, it is easier to succeed. This can be illustrated as follows: a forest photographer wishing to photograph a mushroom must ask themselves two questions.

Is this photo intended to inventory a mushroom species?

Is it intended to be displayed?

In the first situation, the mushroom may have defects, but it must be clearly discernible in order to be compared with other mushroom species. The main goal being to identify the different mushrooms, the photo is successful when the mushroom is clearly identifiable. In the second situation, the mushroom must be smooth, fresh, without the shadow of an irregularity and perfectly highlighted. The light, the depth of field, the composition, everything must be carefully taken into account. Otherwise, the photo cannot be displayed.

A photographer, amateur or professional, uses their artist’s eye in order to enhance the target of their camera, but their creativity is not enough to create a top-quality photo. Like any discipline, technique is acquired through practice and perseverance. In order to obtain successful photos, it is essential to master each criterion step by step and to continue working on the points that are deficient. Between aestheticism and technicality, the photographer must take advantage of every opportunity to try, to create. By composing in the city, in the mountains, and on the move, photographers practice and set themselves objectives. This method is a great way to boost inspiration and creativity, and as a result, produce successful photos.

Film photography has been back in fashion for a few years. As with printing photos on paper, you can easily entrust your photos to a professional laboratory. But it’s also possible to develop your films yourself. Before digital photography, photography classes allowed students to learn how to capture black-and-white photos and then develop them on their own.

In addition to being simple, film development at home is a rewarding practice for photography enthusiasts. If the equipment needed for photography can be intimidating, the equipment for home processing can be to an even greater extent. However, this practice is not complicated and can be quickly mastered. This guide provides all the keys to successful film development.

The cost of development is one of the reasons why it can be beneficial to develop your own film. Today, developing a film in the laboratory costs between €12 and €20 compared to €1 to €3 when you do it at home. Of course, this is only true if developments are carried out regularly. The cost of the products will be quite high if they are only used for one film. On the other hand, for an amateur or professional photographer using several films per month, the price of development in a professional laboratory can very quickly become significant. The necessary equipment can be found online for relatively accessible prices.

Starting out in photography, this de facto excludes experienced and professional photographers. It is therefore as a beginner and neophyte that it is possible to feel a new interest in photography. This can come from a photo discovered in a magazine or an exhibition, or when viewing your own vacation or other photos. The attraction of a photo or an image sometimes arouses curiosity and the desire to be able to reproduce the sensations conveyed by the photo.

But how can this be done? How can you master the rules for reproducing moments through photography? How can you learn this, and above all, which paths can lead to this understanding without getting lost in the plethora of advice and materials available in this sphere?

As a first step, we will discover together the basic tips for beginner photographers. Next, we will look at the equipment needed for photography. Finally, avenues of reflection will be explored in order to extend the learning process once the first notions have been acquired.

It should be borne in mind that photography can be:

a job;

a passion;

a hobby;

an art.

According to these notions, it is important to know how to define where you are in this list. Thanks to digital technology, it’s now very easy to photograph everything all the time. It’s quite obvious that when you could only take 20 photos during your vacations because the development process was expensive and you didn’t know what the result would be, you limited yourself as to the quantity and the subject you photographed.

Today, on the contrary, one can take hundreds of photos, regardless of the exposure, the depth of field, the light present or not, etc. From these hundreds of photos, there are almost always some beautiful, surprising, and astonishing photos, which satisfy and sometimes arouse the desire to deepen one’s knowledge of photography.

But we must not forget that the equipment (even a simple smartphone) manages a multitude of settings automatically and that the mere role of “clicking” on a shutter-release button does not transform a holidaymaker into a photographer, even if one photo out of 100 arouses admiration due to a happy combination of circumstances.

It is therefore important to understand what the prerequisites are in order to learn how to become an amateur photographer. It is necessary to:

enjoy accuracy;

seek to understand light phenomena;

have the desire to recreate an atmosphere, a feeling, something not visible;

patiently learn how to define and master the quality of a photo;

etc.

To become a budding photographer, it is, above all, important to know how to question what really appeals in a photo. It is necessary to determine everything that attracts in the search for photographic quality and then learn with patience and serenity.

Contrary to popular belief, a photo is very often a subjective image. Firstly because the photographer has chosen a moment, a viewing angle, a precise shot, etc. And then because the observer will necessarily translate this same photo according to their own feelings, their own interpretations, etc. So, we must remember that a photo must already be successful before the equipment comes into play, because it is the subject that gives interest to a photo or an image, not the material equipment.

Once this has been understood, it is important to remain practically oriented. Photo equipment can reach high prices:

camera (reflex, hybrid, compact, film or digital, etc.) ;

lens (wide angle, standard, portrait, telephoto, etc.) ;

external flashes;

accessories (bag, shoulder strap, tripod, handle, etc.) ;

computer and software for retouching, sharing, conversion or cataloging.

It is necessary to remember that it’s not the equipment that makes a good photo, it’s the photographer. It is neither useful nor efficient to invest large sums of money in equipment if the photographer does not take the time to learn how to use it according to their abilities. This requires training with simple and inexpensive equipment at the beginning and taking the time to fully understand how it works.

It is important to practice reproducing and improving desired effects (choice of light and exposure, aperture and focal length settings, shutter speed, etc.) with simple equipment to get started. Some applications even allow you to operate a simple smartphone manually with impressive results. This is how a beginner photographer will be able to sharpen their eye and make progress.

However, once the discovery phase is over, it will be necessary to invest in equipment to develop your skills further. But you have to follow the steps in the right order. Budgets can range from a few hundred euros to thousands for high-end equipment or specific needs (astronomical or underwater shots, for example).

It’s not the camera that makes the photographer, it is their patience and tenacity. The secret to learning about photography lies in the ability to be curious, patient and open. Then, the affinities of each person will determine the choices to be made in terms of equipment and specializations.

It’s worth remembering that today, many good amateur photographers are also people who know how to use photo software and enjoy using it. This is an area not to be overlooked.

When it comes to necessary photography equipment, the lens occupies a significant place, almost to the same extent as the choice of the camera itself. But then, how do you make the right decision to make sure you get the pictures you want?

To answer this question, we will first take a look at what a lens is and what it is used for, in order to make a better choice. Then we’ll look at the compatibility features so we can fit the right lens to the right camera. Then we will look in more detail at the families of lenses as well as some basic notions allowing us to understand the technical characteristics of photo lenses (focal length, angle, aperture, stabilization, zoom, etc.).

Once these notions are explained, it will be up to each photographer to find the quality of lens they need for their projects.

Like an eye, the lens is the entry point of light, regardless of the angle used. And like eyes, different types of lenses meet different needs. A camera without a lens is a bit like a myopic person without glasses: colors and masses can be distinguished, but no precise image emerges. But according to the photographer’s wishes, specific criteria must be met for specific lens performance:

desire to take wide-angle or panoramic photos;

long-range zoom or macro-proximity zoom (e.g.: packshot);

photographs of portraits;

wide-angle landscape photography;

etc.

To do this, a lens is like a tunnel containing lenses in a row, allowing (depending on their number, thickness, distances, etc.) you to capture the light and then select and center a desired subject.

As we have said, a camera lens is sometimes as important as the camera on which it is mounted. Among the wide range of camera brands available (Canon, Nikon, Sigma, Sony, Pentax, Tamron, etc.), it is also important to understand that there are many different lenses with different characteristics, manufacturers, but also mounts. One might think, incorrectly, that a lens of brand X could only be mounted on a camera of the same brand. But this is not a hard and fast rule.

For example, some Sigma lenses can be used on Sony cameras. For better navigation, there are frame standards (EF, DX, RF, A, E, etc.) which allow us to learn precisely if the camera is compatible with the desired lens and vice versa. Refer to the manufacturers’ specifications. You should also know that adapters exist to help combine the lenses and cameras together.

Lens prices can rise rapidly and sometimes exceed the price of the camera. When making a purchase, it is important to ensure that the lens is not only compatible with the project but also compatible with the camera. Some cameras accept lenses other than those initially installed (DSLR, hybrid), but others, on the contrary, cannot receive other lenses (compact). This is something to think about before you buy a camera or a lens.

Without being able to repeat here the exhaustive list of all the technical characteristics of a lens, let’s try to grasp the main points. A small reminder about the focal length to better understand its role: it is the distance expressed in millimeters that separates the sensor (APS or full format) from the center of the lens. Also called “focal lengths”, they are noted on the lenses or in the instructions.

Wide-angle lenses have a short focal length which allows them to obtain a wider plane for the photo. This will be preferred, for example, when choosing a perspective of several objects or when taking a picture when you do not have an adequate distance (such as a wall in the back for a wide-angle shot). The focal length must therefore be short. This lens focal length can be combined with the focal length of the camera.

A telephoto lens has a higher focal length (called a telephoto lens from 70 mm focal length). This makes it possible (unlike the wide angle) to capture light from a more precise point farther away from the observer. This corresponds to a zoom effect while maintaining the maximum sharpness of the subject. The technique of a telephoto lens is similar to that of an astronomical telescope in principle.

At the crossroads of the previously mentioned lenses, we can find the multipurpose lens. It allows multiple compositions thanks to a dynamic focal length. It is an adaptable compromise depending on the photo shots required.
As we have seen, choosing a lens requires a number of considerations regarding the desired parameters. It’s a subtle combination of:

the will of the photographer regarding their projects and ambitions;

the compatibility of the equipment between lens and camera;

the budget to be devoted to this investment;

all the characteristics sought (aperture, zoom, angle, case and lens focal length, quality of the optics, etc.).

It is therefore up to each photographer to ask themselves the right questions to succeed in making the right choice when purchasing one or more photo lenses. The technical nature of such accessories makes it necessary to be well informed about the technical characteristics and to devote a considerable amount of time to fully understanding which lens is the best match.

You should keep in mind that choosing a lens means choosing the first accessory that will receive the light of the subject being photographed. Its focal length, its aperture, its zoom, its angle of capture, etc. are all parameters that must be selected to give the desired result.
