Exploring the Magic of Landscape Photography in Slovenia

What keeps you pursuing photography today? What do you deeply love about this work, and what do you hope people feel when they look at your images?

What keeps me pursuing photography today is that joy of chasing rare conditions and witnessing moments most people never see. It is so exciting to arrive at a location before sunrise, not knowing what awaits, and suddenly standing in front of a scene that feels unreal.

What I deeply love about photography is the combination of curiosity, unpredictability, and artistic expression. For me, the real magic is in the hunt of those rare moments when everything aligns.

When people look at my images, I hope they feel both awe and joy. I want them to truly notice how extraordinary the landscapes around us can be. Even familiar places can become magical under the right conditions, and I love sharing that perspective.

Fog appears in almost all your photographs — what does it bring to your vision that clear light never could?

Fog became an important part of my photography largely because of where I live. In central Slovenia, fog appears very often especially during autumn and winter. I became fascinated by the idea that fog could completely transform ordinary places into something extraordinary. That curiosity led me to locations like Sveti Tomaž, Jamnik and many others, where I began chasing those surreal moments for myself.

For me, fog is not about hiding the landscape, but it is about revealing its beauty differently. It is like a blanket of magic surrounding real places, transforming them into something more minimal, rare, and emotionally powerful.

There is a particular kind of light you seem to chase — that moment between night and day, when everything feels suspended. Why is that atmosphere so precious for you to capture?

I have always been drawn to that window between night and day because it feels like the world briefly becomes something more extraordinary than usual. Full daylight is familiar; it is what everyone sees every day.

But sunrise and sunset offer something rarer. Morning often brings softness, mist, and mystery, while evening can create dramatic skies, long shadows, and intense contrasts.

I am fascinated by what light does to a landscape. It acts almost like a spotlight, revealing or enhancing elements that might otherwise go unnoticed. It can transform an ordinary landscape into something visually unforgettable.

How Nina Lozej Captures Slovenia Through Light, Weather, and Time

You photograph the same places again and again — Lake Bled, Sveti Tomaz, the viaducts in the fog. What are you still looking for in these landscapes you know so well? Is it the search for an image, an emotion… or something harder to name?

While I love exploring new and lesser-known parts of Slovenia, there is something rewarding about revisiting special locations through different seasons, weather patterns, and light.

What I am really searching for is not a single perfect image anymore, but a deeper understanding of place over time. Returning makes me happy because each visit holds the possibility of seeing something differently.

Through years of returning, learning, and understanding these landscapes, I have developed the kind of insight that I now want to share through my project, Slovenia Photography Tours. My goal is not simply to take people to beautiful places, but to help them experience those places under the best possible conditions, using my knowledge that comes from years of exploration. In that sense, revisiting landscapes has become both storytelling and expertise.

If your ten most meaningful images formed a series — a real series, not just a selection — what emotion would connect them all? And how would you name it in your own words?

The emotion connecting my most meaningful images would be a combination of awe, wonder, and joy. I think all of my strongest photographs, no matter where they were taken, are rooted in that same feeling — the experience of witnessing something visually extraordinary and wanting to preserve it.

In the beginning, photography was often about sharing where I had been. Now, it is much more about expressing how I see the world, how weather, light, mood, and timing can transform ordinary landscapes into something emotionally powerful.

If viewers were to experience these images as one series, I would want them to feel inspired and more aware of the extraordinary beauty that surrounds us.

If you compare your first images of Slovenia with your most recent ones, what has evolved — in your vision, your way of working, your choices? How would you describe that transformation?

When I look back at my first images, I can see that the foundation was already there. I always had a strong eye for interesting subjects, beautiful light, and visually compelling scenes. What was missing was refinement. In the beginning, I was capturing things that were beautiful on their own, but I was not yet thinking about the deeper interaction within a photograph.

Over time, I evolved through patience, better compositional awareness, stronger editing skills, and a better understanding of weather patterns. Early on, I often rushed, paid less attention to camera settings, and sometimes sacrificed sharpness or balance simply because I was too excited by what I was seeing. Now I stay calm, take my time, observe more carefully, and approach each scene with greater intention.

Even my editing philosophy evolved. I used to be drawn to stronger contrast, exaggerated drama, and more saturated colors. While I still love drama, I now aim for a more honest and natural expression, enhancing what was truly there rather than creating something artificial.

Inside Nina Lozej’s Photography Archive and Creative Workflow

Over the years, you have probably accumulated a large body of images across seasons and places. How do you keep a clear vision of your work over time? Do you ever get “lost” in your own archives?

Over the years, my archive has grown into many tens of thousands of images, covering more than a decade of changing seasons, locations, and personal evolution. For me it feels more inspiring than chaotic because organization has always come naturally.

I see my archive as a collection of memories, experiences, and proof of growth. When I revisit older folders, I am not only looking for forgotten images I may have overlooked, but also reconnecting with earlier versions of myself as a photographer. Old photos often remind me of what inspired me at the time.

Managing an archive is definitely a separate skill from photography itself. Simple habits (transferring files immediately, organizing consistently, maintaining backups etc.) are just as important as artistic vision if you want your work to remain meaningful over time.

What are your three essential habits or reflexes for organizing, finding, and giving meaning to your images over the years?

I follow a simple but very consistent workflow that helps me keep my images organized and meaningful over time. The moment I return from a photoshoot, I transfer all files from my SD cards to my computer. At the same time, I recharge batteries and prepare my gear for the next outing. This keeps everything ready and prevents any buildup of unfinished tasks.

My organization system is very straightforward. Raw files are stored in folders named by date, which keeps everything in chronological order. Edited photos are then separated into folders based on location. This structure allows me to always find anything quickly, even years later, without relying on memory alone.

Backup and consistency are also essential. I make sure to transfer and back up my files regularly because protecting the work is just as important as creating it.

Looking back, what is one thing you wish you had understood earlier about managing your images and your work?

What I wish I understood earlier is how important structure and timing are in photography, not just in the field, but especially after the shoot. In the beginning, I often edited too quickly and didn’t have a clear system for managing my files. I relied too much on memory, which becomes unreliable once you build a large body of work.

Today, I see photography as much more than just going out and taking photos. The real work happens in how you manage, select, edit, organize, and share your images. Having a solid system is what allows creativity to accumulate into something lasting.

My name is Irina Garsh, I’m 35 years old, and I was born in a small town. I graduated from school with top marks and a medal, then went on to study Mechanical Engineering Technology at university. I saw photos taken by my friends and thought, “I can do that — maybe even better.” I worked hard, practiced constantly, and my efforts paid off. The Story Behind the Lens: Burak Esenbey’s Most Memorable Shots

The best image isn’t always the one that is the most beautiful in a technical sense; rather, it’s the one that carries the most cherished memories. It could be a photograph taken during an unforgettable trip, where the surroundings and the atmosphere left a deep impression on me.

Alternatively, it might be an image that represents the challenges we faced in capturing that perfect moment. For example I would say, I have the best memories about my Tre Cime Panorama in the Dolomites. That was the place and the trip were I decided to do landscape and quit Street, Macro etc…. The most difficult image was the image from the Torres Del Paine Peaks in chile. That hike was so exhausting for me, I will never forget that.

The image which describes me best these days, is probably the image of the cactus, the quiver tree and the Milky Way, which I made last summer in Namibia. It exactly shows the style I do with the combination of a good composition of foreground subjects and a colorful sky.

Advice to My Younger Self: A Photographer’s Reflection on Growth and Learning

Reflecting on my journey, I’m not sure I would do many things differently. Every step I took, every experiment—good or bad—has helped shape me into both the person and photographer I am today. Some of the equipment I tried out along the way might not have been the best investments in hindsight, but each experience taught me something valuable.

If I could offer advice to my younger self, I would definitely urge him to start earlier with photography. I began relatively late compared to the young talents emerging these days.

From the Family Darkroom to Mirrorless Cameras: Elmer Eraña’s Photographic Journey

I’ve had my moments with photography most of my life. My father used to have a little photo store in the Philippines and when we moved to Canada, he managed to make our own darkroom in the basement. I think this built my appreciation for the image, and my parallel interest in fashion led me to getting my own camera, so I could take advantage of the darkroom at home.

After a hiatus, being diverted into the world of tech – I came back to photography with the advent of mirrorless cameras, plus the new technology introduced helpful features to overcome some of my personal physical limitations with IBIS and advanced autofocusing systems.

Inside the Workflow of a Fashion Photographer: From Camera to Creative Freedom

I actually have what I call a digital first approach to photography – while I’ve spent my time with film, struggles and learning – it was the digital mirrorless technology is what connected best with me. As my other skills with computers and digital content creation integrated very well.

I approach my photography, always with what I can compensate with in post production. I find that this confidence after the shot, greatly reduces the stress during the shoot and working in teams. I worry less about technical aspects of executing the shot, by carefully selecting the right camera features, and knowing what else I can do afterwards. Then frees me up to manage the human connection and communication with the models I tend to shoot with and mentor.

The style of my photographs is still evolving, but these days it’s changing less dramatically. I have aspects of a painterly feel sometimes, in the way classics appear in art books, just slightly less vivid and lower contrast. I strive to keep an editorial feel, regardless of whether I’m taking actual fashion shots or portraits. The latter creating my preferred look, worthy of something l’d love to see in print.

With flash photography, if you can’t make a good image with one light, adding more lights is unlikely to help – just adding complexity to cure smaller details will distract you from solving the main issue.

Setting small very specific goals with photography can avoid being overwhelmed. When discovering ways to improve – some personal analysis of why you like any feature of an image, can make focused manageable projects on how to improve vs. shooting aimlessly and hoping you realize your style through chance.

Photo Editing Is Part of the Craft

Post-processing isn’t just about fixing mistakes; it’s about refining your vision. Learn to enhance your work while keeping it natural. Over-editing can take away from the authenticity of an image.

Define Your Own Photography Philosophy

Having a personal philosophy for your photography will help lead to your own style. Examples could include: I currently remove any eyebags, plus anything that would likely go away over time or through good skincare; I choose difficult editing techniques causing me to miss some things – this results in a more natural edit; I would rather sacrifice an imperfect exposure or setting during a shoot to maintain the flow or momentum a model might have while posing – knowing I can likely fix it in post.

This recent edit feels like it’s closer to some of the images that inspired me in the past, with the simple styling and the lighting to create a mood enough for us to each create our own story behind the image. As I progress I can resist the urge of conventional composition and poses, shadowed faces, less color, reduced contrast is now more for myself rather than what could be for the masses.

Karen Waller’s Story: Merging Mediums for a New Artistic Vision

My artistic journey began in childhood when my drawing ability was recognised and nurtured by my family. Attending seven primary schools in rural South Australia due to my father’s job relocations greatly influenced my early creative experiences. These unique country towns offered opportunities to engage with and explore nature, deepening my appreciation for the natural world during the 1970s, a period characterized by a sense of freedom and independence in childhood.

Regarding my passion for photography, I view this trajectory as an evolving continuum throughout my life, driven by an intrinsic need and desire to create. I pursued a degree in visual arts, concentrating on painting and drawing. Although there was a brief encounter with photography during this course—using the darkroom and creating a pinhole camera—it was painting that truly captivated me. Years later, access to a Polaroid Camera reignited my interest in photography, particularly due to the instant images characterized by their imperfections. The ability to manipulate the image surface before it appeared bridged my interests between painting and photography, leading me down a new creative path. Eventually, the need for greater control over my imagery prompted me to acquire an SLR Camera, further my studies, and establish a darkroom.

The advent of digital photography has allowed me to reconnect with painterly images through both editing and camera techniques. Editing with a Wacom tablet and pen feels intuitively akin to painting or drawing, effectively blurring the lines between these disciplines for me. My identity is deeply intertwined with the act of creating, and I cannot envisage a life devoid of this passion, which brings both profound challenges and immense joy.

From Portraits to Landscapes: A Unified Vision of Photography

My approach to photography involves continuous exploration and the pursuit of new discoveries. I consistently strive to push the boundaries of my creativity, aiming to take viewers beyond the surface of my subjects and introduce them to perspectives they may not have previously encountered. This includes uncovering fresh ways of perceiving familiar scenes, as well as finding beauty in imperfections and capturing the passage of time. I frequently employ the techniques of long exposure photography and Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) to effectively capture the passage of time within a single image.

I am committed to uncovering the stories behind my subjects, which is particularly evident in my portrait work where I delve into themes such as resilience, aging, identity, and mental health. My method for portraiture entails spending significant time with my subjects to truly understand their unique stories. I approach each session with the belief that everyone has a narrative worth sharing.

My photographic repertoire spans various genres including portrait, landscape, nature, and aerial photography. My consistent approach across these genres is to invest time in getting to know the subject intimately. For instance, my images of the salt lakes on Yorke Peninsula capture their ever-changing nature throughout the seasons and rainfall variations. Familiarity with these locations allows me to determine the optimal times for photography. In essence, repetition plays a crucial role in my approach.

My photographic style is characterised by a painterly, moody, and atmospheric quality. I capture images that span from representational to abstract, encompassing all the subtle nuances in between. The core of my work involves seeking the most effective method to convey the story of a place or person and determining how to best communicate that concept.

From Graphic Design to Architecture Photography: A New Perspective

I discovered photography early on in my graphic design career, using type and image is a core part of a designers job and so I always appreciated it as a medium, I do have a lot of friends that are photographers too so that helps!

I think with the initial evolution of Instagram and discovering a wide variety of photography communities in London led me to sharing my architecture photos. With architecture especially I wanted to show a different perspective and go challenge the traditional style of architecture photography.

Don’t Beat Yourself Up

If something isn’t working with a photoshoot, don’t get frustrated because this won’t help. Try to take a step back or remove yourself from the scenario and come back to it later. I feel like this one works for a lot of things in life too.

Discovering London's Ever-Evolving Architecture from a Photographer's View

It’s so hard just to choose one but I think it would have to be this building. So this very pointy building is based up in Kings Cross and I discovered this recently thanks to one of my Instagram friends.

What I love most about this is the abstract shape and repetition of the balconies and the intensity of the blue sky.

New architecture is constantly popping up in London and it seems like an ever-evolving city which can be simultaneously exciting but sad as every now and then something historic is knocked down. That said you can walk 10 minutes in any direction in London and discover something truly unique.

My story is a bit surreal. Just five years ago, I barely knew how a camera worked, and I’m not even sure I could have told a vulture from an eagle—well, maybe I’m exaggerating a little, but there’s some truth to it! My life took a complete 180-degree turn thanks to the most unexpected twist of fate.

One day, one of my very few Instagram followers—a total stranger—asked me for a mailing address. I thought he wanted to send me a postcard… but instead, he sent me a Sony 200-600mm lens as a gift. When I opened the box, I nearly had a heart attack! I had no idea what to do with such a treasure.

It happened to coincide with the COVID pandemic—when the streets fell silent, emptied of people, yet the natural world seemed more alive than ever. With this incredible gift in my hands, I bought a camera and started going out to “hunt” with it.

I remember my very first wildlife photo like it was yesterday: I spent countless hours in 40-degree heat, sweating inside a tiny tent, just for the chance to see a little owl perch in front of me for mere minutes. A normal person probably wouldn’t have repeated that experience. But I’ve never considered myself normal.

The rush of adrenaline when that tiny owl appeared was so intense that, from that day on, I couldn’t think of anything else—Where and how can I see wild animals up close?

Fast forward two years, and I left behind a 15-year career in journalism to dedicate myself fully to wildlife photography. And here I am today—leading photography workshops around the world, sharing the joy of what I love most with people who are just as passionate about the wild as I am.

A Creative Awakening: His Unexpected Journey into Nature Photography

The timing of my discovery of photography also coincided with the beginning of a new period of my life. Having spent many years raising my children I didn’t have the luxury to leave the house for extended periods of time by myself. Honestly, I was so involved in their formative years that diversions never occurred to me. I didn’t even think about photography until I finally found myself on the shores of a new era in my life where I came to the realisation I needed something that was just for me.

I’m not conscious of my decision to pick photography specifically out of the hundreds of hobby choices out there but I have come to understand that the unconscious decision was informed by my personality; I’ve always appreciated art but had no real talent for most aspects of it, I enjoyed being out in nature and desired to get more exercise. Impulsively I found myself ordering a cheap used Olympus EM-10 online.

Jason Pettit’s Approach to Nature Photography: Beyond Minimalism

My approach to photography has taken many forms over the years. I like to think I’ve refined it, and I’m sure I will again in the future. Today, I practice deliberate observation; taking visual inventories of things that we would normally not burden our consciousness with. I visit the same locations frequently so that I have a personal relationship with the landscape. I feel that only then can I honestly represent a place in my images.

We talk a lot about style, and I’m not sure if I have one but I think all of us are too close to our own work to see it clearly but if we photograph while being who we are, and don’t seek to mimic the style of others then our own style will naturally come through because it is an extension of our individual personality. Having said that, I’ve often been told that my work and style has an element of minimalism. I only partially agree with this but my own belief is that minimalism means something different.

Beyond minimalism, which is the absence of things, my idea of minimalism is more in the message instead of the visuals. So I think that my style has come from my evolving ability to be receptive to my natural surroundings. This has taken me most of my life, dating back to well before I picked up the camera. And hopefully that it will continue to evolve and become even more clear….we never finish learning.

Patience

Rushing never produces meaningful photographs. The statement, “chasing the light” is an invitation to failure… don’t chase, follow the cues you’re given by the landscape. Yes, you will miss some opportunities, but in my experience you will find many more you would have normally missed if you remain focused on one goal.

Curiosity

Practicing photography has opened my eyes to the smaller details in nature. There are many strange and wonderful things out there beyond the common grand views. After noticing these details more I learned so much more about my surroundings. Slow down and take the time to really notice what you’re passing.

Reflection

I think I was in a place in life, at the beginning of my foray into photography, where I was disconnected from my emotions somewhat. There is a great deal of healing to be found in nature and it certainly inspired me to investigate my emotions by finding giving me a time to disconnect from society. Get out more, get out often.

Appreciation for Art

Emotional photography opened the door to art for me. It prompted me to learn about other great photographers from the past who had a desire to express themselves… Minor White, Eliot Porter, Edward Weston, amongst others. I then started viewing other forms of art, such as painting and poetry, and I found a surprising number of parallels with photography. I suggest you spend time learning about other forms of art for inspiration.

Nature Photography That Makes You Think and Transports You

Over the years we fall in, and out, of love with our favourite photos. My answer today may be completely different tomorrow. Imogen Cunningham said it best, “Which of my photographs is my favorite? The one I’m going to take tomorrow.”

I will leave you with my current favourite from my Literal Translations project titled, “Blue Sky Below“.

I chose this one because it embodies what I really want to do in photography, make people think. I really enjoy images which aren’t immediately obvious and can also appear as something completely unrelated. The viewer may be reminded of another place, or time and will hopefully hold it in their mind for longer than a few minutes.

Chill Out

Stop being so serious. Photography should be fun and it’s okay to make mistakes, that’s how you learn. You’re going to make mistakes anyway so go with the flow.

Don't Spend So Much

Honestly, the camera is the least important thing for your photography. Yes you need one, but the latest and greatest is just a distraction for why you’re really doing this. Your imagination is your sensor. If you want to spend more money, spend it on good outdoor clothing so you can stay out longer.

Quality Over Quantity

Be selective. Choose and present only your best. This requires spending some time with your photos before presenting them to the world. Your first impressions can be reactionary, and your initial edits can likely be improved upon with more reflection. You don’t need to post on social media with new content every day.

Don't Judge

When you start to realize you’re good at this, you may get pompous and begin viewing other photographers’ work as inferior.

A: you don’t know much about their chosen genre and don’t have the qualifications to judge.

B: you don’t know where they are with their journey…we’re all learning at our own pace and we all need to evolve naturally.

From Racing Pigeons to Street Photography: a Journey of Passion and Persistence

Coming from a family where painting and music were part of the daily routine, my father always guided me towards art. However, being too young then, I had no interest in these activities, as racing pigeons and activities with them were more important to me back then.

After several years, I had the opportunity to move to London, where I met a man named Dan, a photography enthusiast with a professional camera. He would bombard me daily with stories about the photos he took during his vacations and how clear they were. These stories ignited a spark in me, and I told Dan I wanted a camera to try taking pictures.

I was discouraged a few times and told it was difficult and expensive; I was stubborn and bought a small camera from a shop selling old items. I remember coming home, holding the camera in my hand, pretending to take pictures, and dreaming of the wonderful photos I would create, the large lenses I would attach to the camera, and the colourful straps I would wear around my neck.

The first steps were simple, starting with ducks in the park, flowers in front of the house, the garden, people passing on the street, and other simple things that any enthusiastic beginner photographs at the beginning.

Then came the more difficult stage, where I began studying different photographers, buying books, reading biographies of famous photographers like Ansel Adams and Steve McCurry, and discovering camera models, editing techniques, composition, and everything related to photography. I photographed almost all genres, including weddings. Still, I had a special love for street photography and the connection I had with it, as well as the atmosphere and the feeling that the street personally inspired in me.

One day, I decided to give up other photography genres (including wedding photography) and focus exclusively on street photography in the way I saw it. After this decision, I began to study street photography more and sharpen my instinct for hunting light and the moments happening around me. I dreamed of capturing photos as impressive as the ones I had seen in significant magazines, capturing decisive moments as I had read in the great Bresson’s book. Still, I knew how much work awaited me and how many kilometres I had to walk on this path.

Street photography has become more than just a simple passion for me; it is an essential part of my life, and this path I have chosen fills me with satisfaction. I don’t believe I have a distinct style; I simply follow my instinct.

Eight years ago, right after my father passed away and we buried him, I was in a state of confusion and sorrow. I was in London on a sunny day, but the light that filtered through the city’s ironwork couldn’t reach my soul. I remember that I couldn’t find any photographs from that time, nothing that would remind me of him in a tangible way. The pain had wholly consumed me, and the world seemed to move forward, oblivious to everything I had lost.

I went out to take photos, perhaps because photography had often offered me an escape. It allowed me to focus on something unrelated to what was happening inside me. I was there, but my mind was elsewhere. But then, I noticed a different light, a unique atmosphere that seemed to come from another world. The Beginnings and Evolution of a Passion for Wildlife Photography

I started photographing when I was really young because my mother and father where photographing also. It started with candid pictures and documenting holidays as a 5 year old girl. I kept documenting and taking candid photos for long time. It was only in 2017 that I bought my first L series lens from Canon that I became more enthousiastic of taking my photography to a higher level.

During Covid I started exploring the nature around my own city and started improving my skills by just keep photographing. My interest for Wildlife was always been there and so my main subject in photography is Wildlife.

Exploring Joy Van Der Beek’s Philosophy on Wildlife Photography

I love being in nature. I am totally at ease when I am outside. When I spot Wildlife I am in my happy zone! I can really enjoy being alone with animals in their natural habitat. I talk a lot with fellow photographers about how you take the picture and I came to the conclusion that with me it is all about the feeling. I am not thinking all the time about “the rules” for a good photograph. I am all in the moment and feel if something works out or not.

Most of the time when I get home and look at my photos I am suprrised it worked out great! Sometimes I get disappointed because I did not pay enough attention at details. Than I have to go back and hope for a simular moment and similar conditions to make the photo better than the first time. Composition wise I know what works and what not works in general and from that point on I just try and work out the best placement of the subject in the frame.

I also learn a lot by looking at photos I really love from fellow photographers. I love realistic colors and popping colors in photographs. Contrasting colors too give a picture more vibrant feeling. I experiment still with other kinds of color contrasts or just monotone photos. My style is not yet settled in one style.

People who are not photographing are always interested in what you are doing outside by yourself with a high telephoto lens. They are always curious if you are a professional or not. I always mention I am a huge fanatic hobbyist. By connecting with people in local areas, you can also find hidden gems.

People not into photography can sometimes share a beautiful sighting they did and send you in the right directions. I never have asked random people about beautiful sightings. They always told me by thereselves because of the smalltalk we made and they were interested in the huge lens and what I am doing.

The Unexpected for Wildlife Photography Full of Emotion

I have many photos that I love because of the moments and things happening during taking the photograph. This photo that I have choosen is a roe deer in the blooming heather. Roe deer are really shy and this male roe deer was walking towards a female behind me. I was there with a friend of mine and we immediately duck down to hide on the path between the two heather sections. It was only when he was really close that he saw the weird figure behind the lens (me) and I could make this beautiful photo in the heather.

I think mistakes are there to get you further in your photography. By just trying and falling and getting up again you can progress in your photography a lot. A mistake I made early on in my photography is maybe trying to learn about it by just reading. When in fact just doing and talking about it with other photographers is the key.

Join a phototrip or a photoclub is maybe a good thing when you don’t have many photo friends around you. Asking honest critics about your photography and being open about it will be a huge step into growing more and more in your photoskills. Do not be afraid to fail and to ask a lot of questions. If you really want to improve yourself just set your mind to it and go for it!
